About

An engineering practice, not a platform company

We build one system per estate and stay accountable for it until your team owns it outright. Everything below describes how that actually works, including the parts that are deliberately unglamorous.

Mission

Keeping data correct should not be a permanent staffing problem.

Most enterprise data teams spend the larger part of their capacity keeping existing transformation correct: chasing a schema change nobody announced, explaining why two reports disagree, rebuilding a pipeline whose author left two years ago. The work is necessary, almost entirely repetitive, and it is the reason the roadmap never moves.

Coeus Institute builds systems that take on the repetitive part, prove their own output before it is published, and escalate the decisions that genuinely need a person. We are not trying to remove data engineers from the process. We are trying to stop the process from consuming them.

How the team works

Four working practices we do not negotiate away

These are the things clients notice within the first fortnight, and the things that make the difference between a system that transfers cleanly and one that quietly needs us forever.

  • 01

    Small teams, senior people

An engagement runs with a small group of engineers who have built and operated systems in production, not a pyramid with a delivery layer between you and the work. The person who profiles your data is the person who designs the mapping.

  • 02

    One accountable owner

Every engagement has one named system owner on our side, from discovery through to transfer. They are the person who answers when something is wrong, and they do not change halfway through the work.

  • 03

    We work in the open

Your engineers see every rule, every design decision and every change as it is made, in your repository. There is no phase where the work happens elsewhere and arrives finished.

  • 04

    Written before it is built

Target model, transformation rules, validation thresholds and escalation policy are agreed in writing first. If a decision has not been written down, we do not treat it as a decision yet.

Values

What we hold the work to when nobody is checking

Values are only useful when they cost something. Each of these has, at some point, meant a narrower scope, a longer timeline or a harder conversation than the alternative.

Evidence over assertion

A system that reports a run as correct has to be able to show why. Nothing we build claims success without the evidence attached to the claim, and we hold ourselves to the same standard in writing.

Bounded autonomy

Automation is only safe where its limits are explicit. We define what a system may decide before we let it decide anything, and we would rather ship narrower autonomy that holds than broad autonomy that surprises someone.

Transferable by design

Every engagement is built to be handed over. If your team cannot operate and extend the system without us, the work is not finished, regardless of how well it runs today.

Plain language

Data work fails on ambiguity far more often than on technology. Designs, rules and reports are written so the business owner of the data can check them, not only the engineer who built them.

Careers

Working here

Introduce yourself

We hire slowly and in small numbers: data engineers, systems engineers and applied researchers who are comfortable being accountable for a system that runs unattended inside somebody else's business. The work is deep rather than broad. You will spend weeks understanding one estate properly rather than days skimming twenty.

There is no permanent job board here and we do not advertise roles we are not ready to fill. If the work described on this site is the work you want to do, send us something you have built, what it was for, and what you would do differently now. That is the whole process for getting a first conversation.

If this sounds like the way you want the work done

Start with a conversation about the estate rather than about us. Bring the sources, the constraints and the thing that keeps breaking, and we will tell you plainly whether we are the right people for it.
